Cabinet Camera Obscuraby Ancient Magic Art Tools™
Go into a dark room on a sunny day and poke a small hole in the wall, and you will see a hazy up-side-down image of the outside world projected on the opposite wall. This basic principle has been recorded as far back as 500 BC by great thinkers from Aristotle to Leonardo Da Vinci. Now take that same dark room and make the hole bigger and add a lens; you will get a larger bright clear image of the outside world.
This Room Camera Obscura was then shrunk down to a portable “room” (either with a tent or with a cabinet type, the camera obscura is for sale here), so that the same magic could be observed on a smaller scale. The Cabinet Camera Obscura predates the Portable box Camera Obscura and by the 1700’s there were many kinds of Cabinet Camera Obscuras being used by many including some of the Old Masters of drawing and painting.
The Mahogany Cabinet Camera Obscura that for sale here is based on the Cabinet Camera Obscuras of the 15th and 16th centuries.

Public and private Room Camera Obscura are notable landmarks but can run into the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. With this affordable Cabinet Camera Obscura anyone can bring the remarkable magic of a Room Camera Obscura to their school or other institution, and/or you can have your own Camera Obscura, that you can take anywhere, for a very small fraction of the price.
The image projected by a Camera Obscura is like no other image you will ever see. From the pictures of the images below you can get a good idea what the image will look like, but it is impossible for a digital image to truthfully capture every thing that it is. It is, of course, a full color moving image of your surroundings, but it is much more then that.
The Camera Obscura's image has a beautiful and profound effect on a subject. It simplifies it while adding depth and enriching color. It looks more vivid then life, and you can see every detail just as if you were looking right at it: like you can reach out and grab it.
As you can see above, once you have the image projected onto your white paper or canvas it is a simple matter of tracing the image, and because the image is being projected down from a fixed lens the image will not move as you move your head, which will make it very easy to work with. You can easily render anything: portraits, still-lifes, landscapes, or anything else you come by. And you can use it outside in the field or inside in the studio.
This Cabinet Camera Obscura is ideal for hands-on demonstrates that recreate the magic of the past. Perfect for any classroom that is teaching the history of photography or art—from kindergartners to grad students they’ll all be captivated and edified.
